The next designer fashion item you buy is less likely to bear a “made in China” label. With tariffs on products such as Chinese handbags set to rise, nations like Cambodia and Vietnam are looking more appealing than ever for consumer-goods makers. A recent study showed that 67% of fashion companies expected to decrease the value or volume of production in China over the next two years. Even before China and the U.S. escalated trade tensions, Cambodia enjoyed duty-free privileges for products such as handbags, suitcases and wallets. So far, this designation has been maintained by the Trump administration.
