The solution to Korea's low birthrate continues to perplex most local governments, save for Haenam county. While Korea struggles with fewer babies born each year, Haenam county has, for six consecutive years, had the highest birthrate in the nation. June saw just 26,400 births in Korea, the lowest single-month tally in history. This bests the previous low-birth number of 27,900 recorded in May of this year. Births in the April to June period also hit a record low at a mere 82,000. Many believe that the number of quarterly births in the second half of the year will drop below 80,000.
