Officials from South Korea, North Korea and the United Nations have discussed disarming the tensely guarded inter-Korea border as the two countries look for ways to ratchet down military tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The discussions touched on landmine removal operations that began earlier this month and on details regarding disarming and reducing the number of guards within the Joint Security Area. Currently, JSA guards are armed with rifles and machine guns, which is in violation of rules that only allow handguns in the Area. Moving forward, even sidearms may be removed from the area.
