A proposal to impose universal speed limits on Germany's famous Autobahn has riled car enthusiasts in Germany and elsewhere. The proposed speed limit of 130 kph is said to reduce transportation-related environmental damage by curbing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Germany's autobahn can trace its roots back to 1932 and currently extends some 11,000 kilometers, serving as Germany's main transportation artery. Although famed for having no speed limits, in reality over 30 percent of the Autobahn does indeed have a maximum allowable speed ranging from 60 to 130 kph.
