Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka’s sponsor got into hot water this week for an advertisement depicting Osaka with pale skin and Caucasian features. Osaka, the reigning US Open champion is half Japanese and half Haitian and holds dual Japanese and American citizenship. A Japanese noodle company was accused of “whitewashing” Osaka in a cartoon advertisement. The company has apologized and pledged to be more considerate of diversity issues in the future. Osaka is preparing for the finals of the Australian Open as she attempts to win her second grand slam title.
