The most common surnames in China last year were Wang and Li. Each name is used by more than 100 million people. Zhang, Liu, Chen, Yang, Huang, Zhao, Wu and Zhou rounded out the top ten surnames, according to the report published today by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security.
Statistics revealed there were 6,150 surnames in use across mainland China last year and 23 had more than 10 million users. It is common for Chinese women to keep their maiden name after marriage and children to carry their father's family name.
But there has been an increase in the number of people opting to include both parents’ surnames over the past 30 years. Nonetheless, almost 85 percent of China's population uses traditional surnames listed in the "The Hundred Family Surnames" composed in the early Song Dynasty. It listed 411 surnames before being later expanded to 504.
