Business sentiment in Korea deteriorated sharply in July, suggesting that sluggishness in investment and hiring may not improve soon. Korea's business survey index hit a 19 month-low of 73, down from 80 in the previous month. A reading below 100 means the number of companies forecasting worse business in the coming month exceeds the number expecting better times. The decline was the steepest since July 2015, when Middle East Respiratory Syndrome infections ravished Korea. Economic uncertainties at home and abroad were pointed to as reasons for the drooping numbers.
