With Korea's per capita alcohol consumption the highest in Asia, it may come as no shock that this heavy drinking has negative effects on health.
But the new WHO report that shows 12 percent of Korean men die from alcohol-related deaths may raise eyebrows. On average, Korean men drink 16.7 liters of pure alcohol a year. That is the equivalent of 273 bottles of soju of 668 500-milliliter cans of beer. Drinking alcohol increases the likelihood of diseases such as cirrhosis and cancer, and increases death from traffic accidents such as drunken driving.
