Korea's record-setting heatwave and truncated rainy season have caused algae blooms in seven of Korea's 28 major water sources. Green algae grow vigorously when temperatures rise above 25 degrees Celsius and where water currents are stagnant. The algae include toxic substances, some of which can be fatal. In light of this, the Ministry of Environment and local governments are striving to supply safe tap water. A total of 117 tap water tests conducted in the seven affected areas have confirmed the safety of the water.
