Japan plans to conduct a nationwide survey on hikikomori, or social recluses in the country. The Japanese government defines social recluse as someone who engages in no social activities, such as work or school, for at least six months. Previous surveys in 2010 and 2015 focused on 15- to 39-year-olds, but this year's study will focus on people between the ages of 40 and 64. Japan's social recluses tend to sleep during the day and stay up all night, thereby having fewer opportunities to communicate with others.
