South Korea's national flower, the Mugunghwa or the Rose of Sharon, is called by a different name in North Korea. There, it is referred to as the Mugunghwa tree. In fact, about half of North Korea's listed names of plants differs from the terminology used here in South Korea. When constructing a plant name, North Korea often excludes Chinese characters, foreign words, and profanity. Botanists say mutual agreement on names and terminology will be essential if joint research should move forward.
