A rash of high-profile disappearances in China have caused human rights advocate Michael Caster to describe the country as the people's republic of the disappeared.

Examples include famed actress Fan Bingbing who went missing for more than 100 days and the head of Interpol, Meng Hongwei, whose whereabouts are still unaccounted for.

According to Caster, many of the disappearances have resulted from what China calls “residential surveillance at a designated location,” which he describes as a euphemism for forced detention.
