New Caledonia voted to stay part of France at least for a couple more years. The nickel-rich island in the Pacific voted 56% against independence. French President Emmanuel Macron announced the result with relief from Paris, which is 20,000 kilometers away from its territory. New Caledonia is home to about a quarter of the world's known nickel supply and is a strategic foothold for France in the Pacific region.
