Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the underlying infrastructure of his company's popular messaging apps will be unified. WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger will continue as stand-alone apps, but users will be able to message across platforms with end-to-end encryption.
The new security feature will protect messages from being viewed by anyone except the participants in a conversation. Experts say the tech-based upgrade also has a strategic business objective. Integrating the messaging services could make it harder for antitrust regulators to break up Facebook by undoing its acquisitions of WhatsApp and Instagram.
