Greek lawmakers ratified an agreement to end a nearly three decade-long dispute over neighboring Macedonia’s name. The small country north of Greece will be renamed North Macedonia.

The deal needed 151 votes and passed with 153 votes in the 300-member parliament. It faced fierce opposition in both countries but passed despite violent public rallies.

Greece has long argued use of the term Macedonia implied territorial claims on its own northern province of the same name. But with the issue resolved, North Macedonia now has a clear path to NATO membership.
