It's been 8 years since a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami caused a triple meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. However, cleanup efforts remain bogged down.
Last year, a system to purify contaminated water had failed, which has left 1 million tons of contaminated water still in storage at the power plant. Reportedly, it will take about 2 years to reprocess the water before it is released into the ocean.
Fishermen are vehemently against any move to release reprocessed water into the oceans. Yet, space to store the contaminated water is running out and the tanks themselves are susceptible to earthquake damage. Nevertheless, there is a proposal to hold the water in crude oil tanks for over 100 years before it is disposed.
