The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule successfully returned to Earth after a short trip to the International Space Station. It was a test-run of a spacecraft designed to send U.S. astronauts to space aboard a commercial spacecraft. NASA called it another milestone in a new era of human spaceflight.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk said the heat from the atmosphere was his main concern, but the capsule safely descended to earth with four main parachutes to make an ocean landing. Under President Barack Obama, the U.S. space program turned to SpaceX and Boeing to develop a new way to ferry its crews to space. Now there are signs that the decision is bearing fruit.
